Bethany sits northwest of Portland in unincorporated Washington County, just north of Highway 26. It developed from the 1990s on as planned subdivisions around Bethany Village, its shopping and dining center, and the North Bethany area to the north is still filling in. Because it is outside Portland city limits, services, taxes and some rules differ from the city; check them by address.

Newer homes raise different questions than older Portland houses. Check the HOA's rules, dues and reserve study; window and siding flashing, since some Northwest exterior systems from the 1990s and early 2000s let water in; crawlspace moisture and vapor barriers; and drainage on sloped lots. If the home is still under a builder warranty, read what it covers and when it ends.
