Alameda
Ridge-top streets, elegant older homes, and broad northeast Portland views.
Alameda runs along the Alameda Ridge in northeast Portland, a long natural rise whose curving streets and terraced lots give many homes wide views across the city. It grew mostly in the 1910s and 1920s as a planned residential district, and the Fremont Street corridor at its edge holds the shops and restaurants the neighborhood has used for decades.

On the ridge, look at retaining walls, settled stairs and walks, and where storm water goes when it leaves the lot. In homes of this age, check the original foundation (older concrete often has no reinforcing steel), any remaining knob-and-tube wiring, the sewer line to the street, and whether the house has been bolted to its foundation.
